As a relocation consultant you learn to expect the unexpected

We have helped many families relocate internationally and are well aware of the hurdles and red tape that needs to be navigated. Despite our years of experience, we still have the odd curveball to deal with. No matter how smoothly a job might be running, we are always ready to deal with unexpected scenarios that pop up.

The good news, is that in the hands of the experts what could prove to be disastrous can often be saved with clear thinking and effective management. Here are just a couple of examples of situations that could have turned out without a happy ending!

The case of the missing passport

We had been asking our client for several weeks to provide a scanned copy of his passport to comply with International Air Freight Shipment regulations. After our third time of asking he popped his passport on his home printer-scanner and job done, administration all complete.

The removal team arrived and packed everything for export via international shipment, items were separated for air and sea freight and dispatched accordingly. When our client started to prepare for his own departure, he could not find his passport and then remembered he had left it on the printer-scanner.

The removal team had to ask the airline to removal his air freight shipment off the flight so they could find the printer-scanner, retrieve the passport and then send it via taxi to the hotel our client was staying at.

When “left a bit, right a bit” just won’t cut it

On one particular move, we undertook a virtual survey in January and a full inventory report was prepared and shared with our clients. Everything was approved and we were just waiting for the confirmation of the removal date required, delivery address plus details of what would need to go into store.

Two weeks prior to the moving date our client mentioned that she had forgotten to advise us that when they had moved in 12 months earlier, two items of furniture could not be manoeuvred by the removal-delivery team up and round the stairs. Our client said she had taken a video of the delivery team using a lift to get the cabinets into the house after removing the window. On receipt of the video we established that our removal team would need to order an external elevator and handyman to remove and replace a window.
